South Down MP Chris Hazzard has commended Down GAA for securing approval from the County Committee to finalise negotiations with the Ministry of Defence regarding the lease and development of a multi-purpose GAA complex at the Abercorn Barracks site in Ballykinlar.
Mr Hazzard said:
“I want to commend Down GAA, and especially those officials who I know have been working tirelessly behind the scenes for many months on the potential to develop a world-class Gaelic Games complex at Ballykinlar.
“When progressed this project will not only cater for all Down teams, but it will also be a leading complex for health & well-being in the east Down region; a facility the local community has been in need of for some time.
Mr Hazzard added:
“As one of Ireland’s most successful, and iconic counties, Down GAA has been patiently waiting for many years now to deliver a world-class centre of excellence to nurture and sustain Gaelic Games for generations to come.
“I have little doubt that this vision at Ballykinlar will be a game changer for everybody connected to Down GAA!”
