Sinn Féin Mourne Councillor Willie Clarke has thanked Rivers Agency clearing the section of build-up of stones, debris, vegetation recently, at the Beers Bridge location, at the Islands Park. "A number of residents living adjacent to the islands Park have contacted me regarding their concerns over the amounts of litter on the River bank and Burren River, having examined the area along with my colleague, Chris Hazzard MLA." "I was shocked with the amount of litter and debris in the Burren River at the Islands Park location, which is in the ownership of the council." "I acknowledge that Rivers Agency is the statutory drainage authority and has permissive powers in the Drainage Order (NI) 1973 to carry out maintenance of watercourses to ensure the free flow of water. This legislation does not empower the agency to remove litter unless it is causing an impediment to flow and is likely to increase flood risk.” "This is a significant blockage and could increase the risk of flooding. However the council as landowners of the area have a significant role to improve the appearance of the rivers and river banks in Islands Park Newcastle. There is a need for Newry, Mourne and Down Council and Rivers Agency to jointly carry out a clean-up of the Burren River at the Islands Park Newcastle."
