Pól and Chris were joined by council colleagues, parents and children from the Leitrim play group. The scheme was designed in consultation with the local community, to provide an exciting place to play and learn for the children and youth of Leitrim and the surrounding area and reflects the latest thinking in outdoor natural play provision. The scheme was designed in consultation with the local community to provide an exciting place to play and learn for the children and young people of Leitrim. The aim of the project was to meet the need for adequate play facilities for outdoor play in the village of Leitrim and wider area by (a) relocation of the play park to a larger site nearby and (b) by providing a facility based on a design by Groundwork NI which reflects both modern thinking on play provision and the wishes of the local community, adults and children. The new play park comprises a fully fenced site, with a parking area, a colourful toddler area and an area for older children, including a youth meeting point. It also features challenging exercise and fun equipment, such as a type of aerial skateboard, known as an ‘Aeroskate’, a Turnfly and a jungle climber in a landscaped natural setting, using natural materials such as wood, rock, rope, play bark and sand, blending with the local environment. The new play park was provided with investment from the Down Rural Area Partnership under the NI Rural Development Programme. Grant assistance of £96,251.97 has been paid to date under Measure 3.4 – Basic Services for the Economy and Rural Population. The cost of the project including professional fees is approximately £160,000.00. Also present at the opening were Mr. Vince McKevitt, Axis-3 Contract Manager with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development NI and Mr David Kerr, Vice-Chairman, Down Rural Area Partnership (DRAP). Councillor Ó Gribín thanked Mr McKevitt, Mr Kerr, local MLA Chris Hazzard, local parents and children as well as fellow Councillors and council colleagues for coming to mark the opening. He also thanked the Rural Development Programme for the providing funding, which made the scheme possible and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive for leasing the land to the Council. He expressed his satisfaction that the play park he had long campaigned for was in place for all children to enjoy. He noted that play was fundamental to the development of children and this was reflected in the Council’s play strategy. He commented that there had been many hurdles to overcome in coming to this point and that the Review of Public Administration had overtaken the project which from the 1 April will come under the new amalgamated Newry and Mourne and Down District Council. The play park was provided under Banbridge District Council’s 5 year Strategy for Play FacilityProvision ( 2012) based on demographic research which identified the Leitrim, Gilford and Lawrencetown as priority areas in need of play provision. The Vice-Chairman noted that Rural Development funding had assisted with the provision of three areas and the Council was pleased that all three were now complete and open for use.
