Sinn Féin MLA has described news that Crossgar play park won’t be refurbished before the summer as a ‘bitter blow” to local families. Damaged in an arsonist attack last July, the play park has been fenced off as young children and families are left with a depleted local amenity. Mr Hazzard said: “Promises were made to local families that the arsonists wouldn’t win; that the play park would be restored as soon as possible. However the news this week that it won’t be ready until at least July, maybe August is a bitter blow to local families. “Parents are correct to point out that similar play parks in the district have been refurbished in a matter of weeks, yet Crossgar children have to wait more than a year; this is totally unacceptable. “I have written to the Chief Executive of Newry, Mourne & Down Council now to see if we can expedite the process and have the facility ready ahead of the summer months.” Mr Hazzard added: “Bearing in mind that the only other play facility in Crossgar is simply not fit for purpose I would ask local representatives to put their heads together in an effort to find a speedy resolution. Its simply not acceptable that this issue was allowed to slip of the agenda for so long.”
