Stephen Burns was brought up in Castlewellan and lives in the town with his wife Darina and infant son Conall.

Stephen is part of the new generation of Sinn Fein elected representatives who are leading positive change within their communities.

Stephen has been councillor for only three years but in this short time has quickly proved himself as a catalyst for reform, radicalising the councils approach to sports, recreation and community services.

Stephen has been elevated to Sinn Fein council group leader and is driving the process of amalgamating Down and Newry & Mourne Councils. He has served as Down Councils chair and vice-chair of Recreation and Community services, and currently holds the chairmanship of the councils auditing committee.

Stephen feels passionately about improving youth amenities in the District and is determined to use Sinn Féin’s growing political mandate as a way of and improving community relations.

Candidate Record

During his time as councillor Stephen has prioritized community issues and this has been reflected in the work he has carried out. Stephen was instrumental in saving Castlewellan Community centre from certain closure and has played a key role in the community centre since; including forming the Castlewellan community youth club and securing a 3g sports facility at the site which is used by a number of local soccer and GAA clubs. Stephen has been committed to improving local facilities and relentlessly pushed for projects such as new play parks in the Annsborough and Burrenbridge areas, a new state of the art football pitch on the Bann Road, Castlewellan and the implementation of a new community centre in Ballykinlar village.

Stephen has tirelessly worked to curb incidents of anti-social behaviour in the area and has been heavily involved in the organisation of projects aimed at doing just that. He secured funding for the first ever Halloween beacon event in Castlewellan and delivered the districts first ever ‘Midnight Gaels’ projects at Bryansford and Castlewellan GAC’s.

Equality has been at the heart of Stephens’s term in council. He successfully proposed a marriage equality motion in Down District council and has worked consistently to ensure funding is provided on a needs basis.
