Sinn Féin MLA Emma Rogan has welcomed the decision of Justice McCloskey to grant leave for a judicial review of the British state’s failure to effectively investigate the 1992 UVF attack on the Thierafurth Inn.
The South Down MLA said:
“The groundbreaking report released in 2016 by the Police Ombudsman on the events at The Heights Bar in the Loughinisland Massacre, 1994, not only identified those responsible for the Massacre in 1994, but also linked attacks such as the murders of Jack Kielty in Dundrum in 1988; and Peter McCormack in the Thierafurth Inn attack in 1992, but also made public that some of those involved were state informers.
“Unbelievably, no attempt was ever made to fully investigate and further prosecute those responsible.
“John McEvoy, a casualty from the Thierafurth shooting, is now challenging the state to hold an independent and effective investigation into the 1992 attack.
“In light of this, I welcome the judge’s decision to grant leave for judicial review on Friday. The matter will now proceed to a full hearing early next year.”
