Resurfacing of A2 Warrenpoint-Newry Dual Carriageway No.1 priority.

South Down MLA Sinéad Ennis has met with Permanent Secretary for Department of Infrastructure Peter May, to discuss the Department’s commitment to resurface the A2 Warrenpoint – Newry Dual Carriageway.

Speaking following the meeting the South Down MLA said:

“I was encouraged to hear from the Senior section engineer for the Southern Division and the Permanent Secretary that the 2km section of the South bound carriageway, between the Aghnamoire Road junction to approx. 100m past the quarry entrance, is their top priority. In early November DFI Roads will undertake another cut and drainage operation; this will lay the ground work for resurfacing and I have been given assurances that the Department are actively seeking the necessary funds to complete the project before the end of this financial year.”

“The A2 Dual Carriageway is the main road network connecting South Dow
n and the Mournes to Newry City. It also services Warrenpoint Port which is the second largest Port in the north and 3rd largest on the island. It is imperative that the condition of the Carriageway is maintained to the highest possible standard as well as undertaking the necessary repairs to the surrounding road network. With Winter approaching there is a greater urgency to address this before road conditions deteriorate further.” -ENDS
