Councillor Naomi Bailie graduated from University of Ulster in Politics & Government studies and holds an MA in Irish politics from Queens University Belfast.
A past pupil of St. Mary’s High School and SERC Downpatrick, she is confident that her experience working in the community and voluntary sectors will assist her in helping to tackle a wide range of issues.
Noting her interests as GAA and Irish History, Naomi is currently Political Advisor to Chris Hazzard MLA and works daily with statutory agencies in dealing with problems affecting the people of South Down.
She is a member of the Sinn Féin Enterprise & Investment steering group, Ard Fheis Steering Committee and a regional child protection officer for the party.
Working daily within the Downpatrick community, Naomi has an acute understanding of the most pressing issues facing the people of the area and represents the fresh face of Irish Republicanism.
Naomi was elected to the Newry, Mourne and Down Council by the people of Downpatrick in 2014 and is committed to representing them to the best of her ability.
Naomi has worked alongside Chris Hazzard MLA protecting public sector jobs in Downpatrick, she played a key role in the successful lobby of DARD’s Minister Michelle O’Neill to relocate the fisheries department to the South Down area.
If elected, Naomi will continue to fight for further decentralisation of public sector jobs, the creation of new business opportunities and increased employment in both the public and private sectors.
Naomi is a strong advocate of the Downe Hospital, delivered by her party colleague and former Health Minister Bairbe De Brún. Naomi will continue to campaign with all groups and stakeholders, to ensure the preservation and improvement of all services currently provided at the Downe.
Sport provision and community health and wellbeing initiatives are a key priority. Naomi will work closely with sports clubs and community groups supporting the vital work they carry out providing essential social and sporting opportunities to the young and marginalised in the locality. Her previous experience working as a welfare advisor and youth worker will assist in her endeavors.
Naomi has been extremely active in supporting the fishing and farming communities, facilitating meetings with both the DARD Minister and MEP Martina Anderson, ensuring local farmers and fishermen have a voice in both Stormont and Europe.
Alongside her colleagues in the assembly, Naomi has been vocal and supportive on the need for an increased broadband provision in rural areas. Ensuring places such as the Lecale coast are included in plans to increase broadband and mobile phone coverage.
Naomi has worked closely with executive ministers to ensure the restocking of the Quoile River and that permanent fishing stands are installed for local anglers and tourists alike. Naomi believes that Down has been under developed over the last thirty years and will work to promote Downpatrick and Lecale as a premier tourist destination and area for targeted government investment.
