Previously, Mickey held the position of Sinn Féin party Group leader on Newry & Mourne council and is the current Chairperson of the (STC) statutory transition committee which is tasked with merging both local councils.
Mickey has held positions on a number of important council bodies including the District development, Finance, Environmental Control, Leisure services, Rural and Building Control Committees as well a council appointee on the southern peace III partnership.
A dedicated community activist and member of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Mickey has worked with his party colleagues to improve community safety across the district, particularly at Halloween, and over a 8 year period he has played a key role in securing funding for a two day festival of events that have included a Fireworks display in Warrenpoint Town Square.
Mickey believes community; sporting and voluntary organisations are an important part of the local community and makes efforts to support them at every available opportunity. He was responsible for securing substantial funding for the major upgrade of Warrenpoint Town FC’s facilities at Milltown, giving the club the opportunity to play their games in their home town. He has also been responsible for progressing discussion on a community based facility for Warrenpoint, putting it firmly on the council’s agenda. Mickey is committed to this project and sees it as his number one priority for the town and a project long overdue for the youth of Warrenpoint.
Mickey acknowledges the need for further social housing in the Warrenpoint area and will continue to campaign to see greater investment in social housing for the town.
He has been to the fore in campaigning for further road upgrades and safety features in the area and was active in securing funding for the new traffic controls on the upper Dromore Road and the resurfacing of the Bridle Loanan to name but a few. He will continue to put the needs of his home town first and work to the best of his ability to provide a service to all in the community.
