Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MP has said ‘time is running out’ to prevent a Brexit border in Ireland.
The South Down MP was speaking at the launch of independent legal advice in Westminster which outlines the legal, political and economic imperatives behind Special Status for the north.
Chris Hazzard said:
“As Brexit talks near the end of the current phase, the Tory government and the DUP need to recognise their approach can only deliver a hard border in Ireland. This is totally unacceptable to the vast majority of people in Ireland, north and south.
“The DUP speak only for a narrow section of unionism in their irrational loyalty to Brexit. The reality is that the people of the north of Ireland voted decisively to remain in the European Union.
“If the Tories and DUP get their way they will deliver restricted movement on our island, economic chaos and undermine the basic rights of citizens outlined in the Good Friday Agreement.
“Sinn Féin is determined to avoid this disastrous scenario
“The only solution to the threats posed by Brexit in Ireland is Designated Special Status for the north of Ireland inside the European Union.”
