57 year old John Rice is from the Ballylough Road in Castlewellan and he is a past pupil of Clanvaraghan Primary and St Malachy’s Secondary schools. He lives in Castlewellan with his partner Fionuola and they have one daughter and three grandchildren. A former player with St John’s GAC, John is a keen cyclist and a member of the Kilmegan VC cycling club. He also enjoys walking in the Mournes and local forest parks.
Aside from cycling, walking and his support of the GAA ,John is also an avid reader who has been a highly motivated political activist his entire adult life. A former Republican POW, John is a strong supporter of the peace process and he has held a number of positions within Sinn Fein locally including Cathaoirleach of the South Down Sinn Fein Comhairle Ceantar and the Castlewellan cumann.
John is currently a Councillor on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council representing Slieve Croob DEA. Johns focus has been primarily on the many rural issues that the constituency faces.
