Investment needed to grow tourist economy’- Rice

Councillor John Rice has expressed concerns over the poor conditions of once
popular picnic sites. The Sinn Féin Councillor who represents Slieve Croob
stated;

‘After being in contact from local residents who live near the once popular
picnic site at the Windy Gap on Slieve Boley between the villages of Leitrim
and Dromara I was shocked to witness the deterioration of the site for
myself.’

‘The site used to have up to seven picnic tables, however, it currently has
none. This is massively worrying, we should be encouraging people to come to
these areas, but the current state of the site would not make any visitor
want to come here.’

‘This was proven when I was approached by a tour company who take large
groups of American tourists across the county. They made it clear to me,
these sites are underfunded and not kept to a high enough standard to make
tourists want to stop here, as well as the obvious problem of nowhere to sit
and take a lunch’.

‘A similar site on the Lighthouse Road nearby is also facing these same
problems of being rundown’.
