Newry Mourne & Down Councillor Mickey Ruane has confirmed that the Council has agreed to an extension and upgrade to the Municipal Graveyard in Warrenpoint.
The local Councillor explained,
“I was approached by constituents in middle of 2017, who have loved ones buried in the Municipal graveyard in Warrenpoint who felt there was a need for improvement to the Graveyard.
‘They highlighted concerns about the layout and also the introduction of seating and other minor improvements. Local funeral directors had also
raised concerns with access issues throughout the facility pointing out the lack of vehicle turning and
parking spaces and restricted access for those with mobility issues”.
The Sinn Féin elected representative continued,
“I convened a meeting on site with the relevant Council Official and we discussed these concerns and the broader issue of the extension of the Graveyard to fit the future needs of Warrenpoint.
Following the meeting, a programme of works was devised and put forward to the rates process and was agreed. Minor works such as the installation of seating and safety railings and other improvements have already been carried out”.
Welcoming the decision to upgrade the cemetery, the elected representative concluded,
“At last weeks Regulatory & Technical services committee, approval has been giving for the extension and upgrade to the value of £125.000. These works are to be welcomed and are much needed and I look forward to their completion in the months ahead”.
